Comitis: Itumeleng Khune is Still Good

There is still plenty of gas left in Itumeleng Khune’s tank, according to Cape Town City chairman John Comitis.

On 18 May, the 36-year-old Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper sparked retirement rumours when he was honoured during Amakhosi’s 0-0 draw against Polokwane City. However, Khune insisted that he would still “continue giving my all” to the beautiful game as a player.

In an interview with a local soccer outlet on Sunday, 26 May, Comitis concurred with Khune’s sentiments.

“Khune is still good,” he said. “As a goalkeeper, you mature with age, and looking at Khune’s age right now, that is the right age for a goalkeeper to keep on playing. He can still play for any team in the PSL and still do well. He is still a very good goalkeeper for any club that may need him.”

Does this mean that Cape Town City will consider hiring the veteran shot-stopper when the latter’s contract with Chiefs expires at the end of June?

“We still have Darren Keet. We will persevere with Keet at the moment, we don’t need Khune right now,” Comitis answered. “As I have said before, he is a good goalkeeper, but for now, we are good with what we have and that’s Darren Keet for us.”
